Well Connected

The goal is to make it easy for advertisers to buy local cable 6/06/2004 08:00:00 PM Eastern

Just a few years ago, cable executive Steve Houck recalls, if you were a national advertiser who wanted to buy time on all of Chicago's cable systems, "you had to make something like 52 separate buys."

Today, that's no longer the case. In Chicago and in many other cities, interconnects link separate cable systems in a market so an advertiser can make that "one-stop" buy.

National Cable Communications (NCC), a company formed by Cox, Comcast, and Time Warner cable systems but partnered with other major multiple-system operators, is making cable simple to buy. Houck, vice president of NCC's Continental division, projects that 85 of the top 100 markets, 140 markets in total, will have interconnect operations by the end of this year.

New York City is not on the list of the top interconnects listed below. That's because advertisers can buy the surrounding area through an interconnect firm that supports Cablevision, Comcast, and Adelphia systems. In New York City, however, which is controlled by Time Warner, advertisers make a separate deal.

The list below notes top interconnects, how many channels an advertiser can buy, and subscribers reached.
