BitTorrent, whose peer-to-peer network technology has been used by millions to download TV programming, has released a new commercial service, BitTorrent DNA (Delivery Network Accelerator). The new DNA is aimed at content publishers, including media companies. Internet TV specialist Brightcove, which delivers content for CBS News, Discovery and MTV, will be the first BitTorrent DNA customer.
The service is a secure, managed peer network that will charge commercial customers for delivery on a per-gigabyte-delivered basis.
BitTorrent DNA should lower costs enough to make high-quality Internet video a viable business, says BitTorrent co-founder and president Ashwin Navin. It's designed to improve the speed of downloading large media files by working with the existing Web infrastructure. DNA uses a distributed network of computers that store and deliver slices of a file that are then made whole by the software client.
