DESCRIPTION
The General Manager is responsible for aligning the Howard University
TV station's strategic plan of action with the academic enterprise. As a
university leader the GM will provide a more seamless connection
between WHUT and Howard University academic programs and
establish innovative solutions that contribute to the advancement of the
University brand. In conjunction with the renewal of academic
programs, the GM will create a WHUT operating model that offers
alternatives for traditional PBS programming that focuses on the
richness of the HU Legacy and supports the goals of the University in
conjunction with the University's Strategic Framework for Action II.
This position has overall strategic management of Howard University
Television, WHUT, to increase the station's visibility in the public
broadcast arena and its local community, developing partnerships
necessary for fundraising, advocacy in the value of public broadcasting,
and business development. The GM manifests an understanding of the
academy with a willingness and strong commitment to collaboratively
work with students and other university faculty, administration, and staff.
SUPERVISORY
ACCOUNTABILITY: Supervisory Responsibilities for Deputy General Manager and the
strategic operations that involve the Director of Engineering, Director of
Operations, Director of Development, Director of Student Training,
Director of Administration, and Director of Broadcast Service. In
addition develops and implements ongoing plans for programming that
satisfies the requirements of the University. Develops and maintains an
effective plan for fund-raising activities.
NATURE AND SCOPE: Internal contacts include executives, administrators, faculty, students
and staff of the department and the university at large. External contacts
include consultants, representatives from other colleges and universities.
PRINCIPAL
ACCOUNTABILITIES: Architects the framework for policies and procedures to ensure that all
University, FCC and governmental regulations are followed and maintained.
Demonstrates knowledge of the public TV business.
Serves as spokesperson for public TV on and off campus, representing the
station at local, regional, and national functions.
Establishes and maintains contact with various academic departments to developing
avenues by which the station can provide practical learning
experiences for students and faculty.
Develops an Internal Advisory Board with persons who have passion about
growing WHUT.
Leverages WHUT's current digital assets to generate revenue via creative
partnerships with other universities.
Creates a participation model that provides a training laboratory for Howard
Students.
CORE COMPETENCIES: Ability to lead, strong communicator and maintains effective work relations
with community groups and various funding sources.
Ability to communicate the mission and needs of the station to various
organizational groups via formal and informal presentations.
Ability to interact and effectively participate with various community and
professional industry groups to advance the mission of the station and the
University in regards to the station's mission.
Ability to develop short and long range strategic plans, and manage by stated
goals and objectives.
Ability to appear on TV broadcast and communicate the mission and needs of the
station to the general public.
Ability to evaluate and develop managerial and creative talent.
Ability to evaluate programming and fund-raising proposals.
Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relations with staff, faculty,
students, University officials and the general public.
MINIMUM
REQUIREMENTS: Master's degree Management, Business Administration or related field and
12-15 years of experience. 16 years of related work experience may be
substituted in lieu of educational qualifications.
