MTV Tr3s Partners With Verizon for Mobile Offering

Bilingual youth channel MTV Tr3s has partnered with Verizon Wireless to provide broadcasts of some of its TV shows via mobile phones and devices. Starting March 28, some of MTV Tr3s’ most popular programming is now available on Verizon’s V CAST Mobile TV.

Azteca America Opens Studio in Mexico City

Late last month The Mexicanal Television Network struck an agreement with Milwaukee-based Journal Broadcast Group to distribute its signal via multicast to Mexican communities in Las Vegas, Palm Springs, Calif., Tucson, Ariz., and Boise, Idaho. As a result of the deal, effective as early as the third quarter, Mexicanal is expected to increase its reach by roughly 1.2 million viewers, from its current 1 million. Hispanic TV Update spoke to Mexicanal President Luis Torres-Bohl about the agreement, the importance of multicasting and the adoption of digital technology by Mexicans living in the United States.
 


 

Sí TV Freshens Look

Sí TV, which targets young, English-speaking Latinos, has updated the graphics on its television and broadband platforms. The revamping, which includes tweaks to the network’s logo as well as new, edgy animated on-air IDs, incorporates pop art and iconography drawn from the many Latino cultures that Sí TV serves, according to network officials. For example, one of the IDs features a bejeweled skull, which is a symbol of good luck in Mexican culture, said CEO Michael Schwimmer.

Gol Nets Trio of World Cup Qualifier Deals

Gearing up for its upfront presentation to advertisers, Gol TV has buttressed its futbol roster with deals for 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches for three top European sides. The soccer-centric service has netted deals for qualifying games involving the Italian, Spanish and German national teams, the third-, fourth- and fifth-ranked teams in the world, during 2008 and 2009, leading up to the World Cup in South Africa, according to GolTV founder and CEO Enzo Francescoli.

Univision Wins Presidents Awards for Digital TV Education Campaign

The National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation named the winners of its Service to America Awards, which recognize industry members and others for outstanding community service.
The television-station award went to Hearst-Argyle Television's WYFF Greenville, S.C., for community initiatives with more than 48 different local organizations including the United Way, the Urban League and the Red Cross. The NAB said the centerpiece of its outreach was monthly meetings with community leaders to discuss local issues and concerns.
A Presidents Award went to Univision Communications for a digital-TV-education campaign targeted toward Hispanics, who are disproportionately over-the-air TV households.

Alejandro Luna has joined Fox Pan-American Sports LLC as anchor. In this role, Luna will be a key studio host and will cover all major club tournaments that Fox Sports en Español produces exclusively for the U.S. Hispanic market, including Copa Santander Libertadores, Copa Nissan Sudamericana and InterLiga. Prior to joining Fox Sports en Español, Luna served as the Los Angeles-based sports anchor and reporter for Univision and Telefutura.

Glenn Dryfoos has been appointed svp business affairs at Univision Communications. He will be based in Miami and will report to Univision President and COO Ray Rodriguez. Dryfoos, a former Telemundo executive, will be charged with overseeing business affairs for Univision Radio and the company’s TV and online divisions. Prior to joining Telemundo, Dryfoos was svp/general counsel for the Cisneros Television Group.
