NEC Targets $500M in IPTV Sales by 2010

NEC said it will launch a "full-scale IPTV business," providing end-to-end video delivery systems for communication carriers around the world, and the Tokyo-based company is predicting the unit will generate sales of around $500 million (50 billion yen) by 2010.

• Britain's Tiscali UK is expanding and upgrading its IPTV service with Harmonic's DiviCom Electra 5400 standard-definition MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) multichannel encoders, as part of its rollout to 10 million homes.

• Sweden's Telenor will supply Ruckus Wireless' Smart Wi-Fi 802.11g systems as part of its IPTV service, offered through subsidiary Bredbandsbolaget.

• Harmonic's DiviCom Ion AVC standard-definition encoder completed conformance testing for the Microsoft Mediaroom IPTV software platform.

• Deutsche Telekom selected JDSU's service-assurance test solutions to support delivery of its IPTV service.

• Lithuania's TEO LT AB has selected Widevine Technologies' Cypher content-protection system for its GALA IPTV service.

• Amino Communications, a supplier of IPTV set-top boxes, is opening an office in Shanghai, China, to provide local support for its manufacturing partners.

• AT&T rolled out its suite of interactive TV features, which include customized news and weather information, to U-verse TV customers in Oklahoma City.

• Amino will use Ant Ltd.'s Galio platform for the AmiNET530 HD H.264 personal video recorder set-top.

• SecureMedia announced the integration of Cinea's Running Marks watermarking solution into its Encryptonite ONE System.
