Neil Patel Nominated to Head NTIA

As expected, the White House nominated Neil Patel to head the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, which is overseeing thedigital-TV-to-analog converter-box-coupon program. Meredith Atwell Baker, who has been heading the program as acting NTIA chief, confirmed last week that she was leaving the agency.

NFL, Time Warner Cable Scrimmage on Capitol Hill

The National Football League and cable operator Time Warner Cable squared off Wednesday over the issue of control of sports programming generally and their carriage dispute in particular.

Microsoft, Move Networks Partner on Video Streaming

Move Networks -- which supplies high-quality video-streaming technology for the Web sites of ABC, ESPN, Discovery and Fox -- said its Move Media Player will soon be incorporated into Microsoft Silverlight, Microsoft’s cross-browser, cross-platform software plug-in that is designed to bring new video and graphics capabilities to the Web.

Sony: Blu-ray Battle Has Just Begun

Blu-ray, the HD optical-disc format created by Sony, definitively triumphed over the competing HD-DVD format after Toshiba’s decision last month to stop making HD-DVD players. Dorgan: FCC Shaking Its Pom-Poms for Consolidation

Sen. Byron Dorgan (D.N.D.) told reporters he had commitments from the heads of the Senate Commerce Committee, Republican and Democrat, to move a bill by April that would help to rein in "galloping concentration" by blocking the FCC's loosening of the newspaper-broadcast cross-ownership ban in a Dec. 18 vote.

Martin Won't Set Resignation 'Hard Date' if Next President Is Democrat

According to a source familiar with the request, FCC chairman Kevin Martin declined to commit to resigning if and when a Democrat takes over the White House.

TiVo Touts Cable Progress

DVR supplier TiVo was accentuating the positive late Wednesday during its fourth-quarter earnings call, although the Alviso, Calif.-based company still posted a net loss of $6.4 million, or 6 cents per share, for the quarter ending Jan. 31.

NATAS Loses Appeal on Broadband Emmys

The New York Supreme Court dealt a second blow on Wednesday to the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, denying the academy’s petition to vacate a December ruling against its creation of a new broadband Emmy Awards category. The decision was a victory for the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the Hollywood counterpart to NATAS.

Dish Network Ready to Meet with Noncoms Over HD Carriage

Dish Network responded to noncommercial broadcaster complaints that it has not struck a carriage deal with those stations for carriage of their HD signals, saying that it is ready to talk. It will be talking about a phased-in approach for all TV-station HD signals that has the backing of Media Access Project.
