Verizon said it topped 1 million FiOS TV subscribers in the first few weeks of 2008, although analysts said uptake on the telco’s fiber-optic services may have been a bit cooler than expected.

AT&T Reaches 231,000 Subscribers

The company had 231,000 U-verse TV subscribers at the end of 2007, up 83% from 126,000 three months earlier, and claimed it’s on track to reach 1 million subscribers by the close of this year.

• IPTV set-top box supplier Amino joined the Open IPTV Forum, a consortium founded by Ericsson, France Telecom, Nokia Siemens, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Sony and Telecom Italia.

• Columbia's UNE-EPM Telecomunicaciones will launch its IPTV service in Medellín and Bogotá over the next few months, using technology supplied by Verimatrix, Orca, Sagem and Bitband.

• Verizon received a cable franchise from Wayland, Mass., to offer FiOS TV to the town's 2,000 households, bringing to 64 the total number of Massachusetts communities where the service is or will soon be available.
