KCNC Denver's Chilling Report

November 21, 2007

KCNC is shaking things up in Denver based on an investigative report centered around the hiring practices of airplane deicers.Brian Maass’ three-month investigation into Servisair, a major deicing contractor at Denver International Airport, revealed some security lapses that are large enough to drive a 757 through. A Servisair administrator helped an undercover reporter fill out his job application, fudging driver training that he was supposed to receive, and instructing him on how to lie when asked if he’d received his training.

Other Servisair employees said they’d had a similar experience.

With airport security near the top of everyone’s mind, the Denver airport’s deputy manager of aviation called the report "very concerning."

I saw your report years after publication.
This is my first year of being a deicer and I read of malfeasance in training!
Most of my life, I have had the lives of others in my hands and to work with a bunch of deadbeats wasn't going to start now.
The report missed on job training.
Every move watched from the icehouse. Any transgression from established practice is called and the experienced driver in charge has a kill switch!
As an ex air pilot, a sea captain and sailboat instructor, I take notice the training we receive and how it translates onto real aircraft. i notice repeat reinforcement of training before every shift. The pride of those entrusted with aircraft safety and the aggressive push for safety reinforced on icing crew.
I love the very real challenge of the job. I enjoy fewer calls as muscle memory allows better control of sophisticated equipment. Fewer reminders to "check this, avoid that and we need more there." Ensuring aircraft are safe and clean to fly becomes more efficient with team work from those in the control room , the pod and cab. We all ensure safety for those entrusted to our care and take it very - very seriously.
Serviceair isn't who I read about in the critical report. It's a very conscientious and different beast altogether.
