'24/7 Newsroom' Highlights Best of Local News
We stumbled upon local TV veteran Tom Petner’s newish website, the247newsroom.com. Petner used to be the editor at TVSpy.com (TVSpy of course just announced that they’re part of TV Newser/MediaBistro/etc.), wrote for NewsPro and TVNewsCheck, and before that, worked in the newsrooms at WCBS New York, WCAU Philadelphia, and others.
The site aggregates news content, offers polls on the story du jour, perspective from “Media Mavens,” and job listings.
“News is more than a career,” goes the new site’s tagline, “it’s a 24/7 lifestyle.”
Writes Petner in his introductory note:
If you’re like many in our newsrooms, your job is more than a career, it’s an all-consuming lifestyle from the market where you live to your circle of friends, your decision-making and how you view world events. I hope what you find in the247newsroom will deal realistically with those lifestyle demands and the pressing issues facing today’s broadcast newsrooms. I will strive to make the content timely, without the name calling, put downs and bad mouthing about our business. While I believe there are many things wrong in the broadcast industry and our newsrooms, local news is far from dead - it’s changing. My hope is that the247newsroom will help you stay ahead of the curve and keep you informed about the changes and trends.

I am a regular veewir of TVO and public affairs program now named THE AGENDA with Steve Pakin. Tonights broadcast came from the new Community Centre in Niagara-On The -Lake and was supposed to be based on issues important to the Niagara Penninsula. The one hour was broken into several segments the first of which was employment/agriculture and the loss of industrial jobs in the penninsula. There was no real sollution offered other then to blame high energy costs and government regulation. Next came employment/tourism and although informative there were no real solutions offered to regaining lost industrial jobs other then to say that minimum wage service jobs were better then no jobs at all. This let to a discussion about the enviorment/energy and comments by the three political party representatives, all of whom recited party doctorin which in turn opened the door for a segway from the chairperson from yesterday's(Sun) Agenda Camp who resolved that all our energy problems could be resolved if every Ontario homeowner converted to geo-thermal energy. Before I conclude I would like to say that I have watched these local based programs in the past and always thought that they provided a real insite for the areas involved, I must say that I no longer feel that way because now I know that in our case it was the vocal special interest groups that have the most to say and are allowed to do so.Finally the most disturbing omission made by the three politicos came from our own MPP, Peter Kormos. The last discussion revolved around preparations being made for the 1812 Bi-Centenial. MPP Craitor mentioned Ft. Erie, Niagara Falls and N.O.T.L events in his riding, Mr. Lepp(PC) stated his party was pushing for the formation of a provincial steering committee and finally Mr. Kormos, Mr. Kormos mention the Marshville Fair, Canal Days and St. Catharines. Really ? Two events and one place not very high up on the 1812 priority list. One place not even in his riding! What about THOROLD ? This is the Welland/Thorold riding where 1812 events actually happened, which I am sure he will remember before October. Alan Hughs should not be happy.
