Paranormal State: A&E

December 11, 2007

“The same excuse hardly applies to A&E, which continues to drift further toward TV’s dark side in its endeavors to entice younger viewers. Even with a regular pre-episode disclaimer, the channel lends credence to paranormal poppycock that consistently generates just enough of an audience to prompt every demo-chasing basic cabler to weigh in with its own straight-faced reality variation on the theme.” (Variety) “If you’re tackling a story on global warming, you have to learn something about global warming," Buell said. "If you’re dealing with demonic forces, you have to learn something about demonic forces.” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) “Now, you might say that it’s all manipulated, but I went to one of these ghost hauntings with the crew last summer. I’d tell you what happened to me, but you’d think I had skipped my meds.” (NY Post) “What if the gang from ‘Ghostbusters’ opened their own grad school? The new documentary series ‘Paranormal State’” (Albany Times-Union) “Made by some of the same people who produced Laguna Beach, it’s no wonder the show sometimes borders on the sensational. Viewers are treated to lots of foreboding light effects, clever camera angles, and haunting music…But is that freakishly cold spot in the house they are investigating the result of a restless spirit absorbing all the warmth of energy from that location? Or has the satellite thermometer simply located a persistent draft? Intelligent minds may disagree.” (Philadelphia Inquirer) “There are some creepy moments in the episode but it doesn’t look like the goal of the series is to scare the crap out of people. The main focus of the series, based on the first episode, seems to be on the people who have encountered the ghosts and how their lives have been affected by the encounters. While I was watching the episode, I found myself feeling skeptical about the whole ghost thing but at the same time, feeling sympathy for the family that is featured.” (Cinemablend) "Having watched the first few episodes of Paranormal State, I am willing to say they are just as ridiculous as Scooby Doo was, and not nearly as entertaining." (Broadcasting & Cable)

It is hilarious when Buell demands the "ghosts" to present themselves. OR challenges the "ghosts". The show is a waste of time. They dedicated an entire episode to a basement that had carbon monoxide poisoning. And in another episode Buell claimed that mice are present where there are ghosts, instead of using logic to conclude that people are stupid enough to mistake mice in the walls for ghosts bumping around.

I too find this show hard to believe, and I like to think I have an open mind. I've encounteed spiritual forces for most of my life, and none of them were demonic!! I do watch this show regularly, if mostly to see how arrogant Ryan possibly get. And that mothman episode was a joke! Teen expert historians, demonologists, etc..Preposterous. And as I have often read, Lorraine Warren has never entered a house that wasn't "infested with demons"!! Entertaining? Absolutely! But if I want to see the real Mccoy, It's called Ghosthunters.

Of what i've watched, it is better than Discovery's "A Haunting" This show does not seem as Bias against the Pagan/Wiccan community. I am still keeping a watch, but they have had some discrepancies that worry me. I look forward to a more intense scrutinize evaluation.

Come on what's with these people? Does everything have to be a demon? This could not be more phoney. This isn't the dark ages it's ridiculous that everything is perceived as demonic. I can't beleive this is still on the air.

I looked forward to watching this show and was, once again, disappointed by the way the media depicts psychic research. Teenagers who are trying to keep from smiling have ridiculous titles like "Technical Director" posted under them so that we know their area of "expertise." Expertise? What expertise? It's EMBARRASSING! A teen thriller that even my kids groan aloud to when they see the ads. Stupid show. Too bad.

I was terribly unimpressed with this show, especially b/c of the religious overkill. It is a little too sensational to be even somewhat credible. From the sprinkling of Holy water, to the demonologist, to the presence of a priest...is all too much, too phony. How arrogant for the one guy keep claiming that some demon is following HIM, and he is ready for battle - are you kidding??
This show is laughable...a big thumbs down!
