John Bolton, Stephen Colbert's Alphadog, Jon Stewart's Guest

March 20, 2007

John Bolton, a frequent target of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report has a new role: guest.
Bolton will be appearing on The Daily Show tonight, even though he (and his mustache) have been much maligned over the last few years by the show, and its tongue in cheek cousin The Colbert Report:

Perhaps the most interesting thing of all is the press release Comedy Central put out yesterday announcing Bolton’s appearance. It is a very fluffy release that discusses Bolton’s efforts to promote peace throughout the world. Such a warm profile of Bolton contradicts the show's prior coverage of him. When discussing Bolton, the formula has usually been: mustache joke… hypocrisy…mustache joke…embarrassing video clip.

I am sure that part of the deal for getting Bolton on the show was the flattering press release, and I am sure Jon will not be easy on Bolton, as his interviews with William Kristol have demonstrated; but still, it strikes me as somewhat strange. And almost certainly pretty good TV.
