Could CBS’ 'Moonlight' Rise From the Dead?

May 14, 2008

Updated Below: CBS officially cancelled the supernatural vampire drama Moonlight this morning, ending weeks of speculation, and most certainly upsetting the series’ vocal (but small) fan base.

Still, Moonlight-ers, take heart, your series may yet rise from the dead.

CBS' 'Moonlight'

Media Rights Capital purchased the right to program the CW’s Sunday evening primetime block earlier this month.

According to Nikke Finke, MRC is considering picking up Moonlight to fill one of the two hours it is programming on Sunday nights.

Why? Moonlight may not have been good enough for CBS, but the drama drew more than twice as many viewers as Gossip Girl, widely regarded as the CW’s signature show.

So don’t drive that stake into Moonlight’s heart just yet.

Unless you really want to, that is. Nina Tassler, president of CBS Entertainment, says she does not expect the CW to pick up the show. I guess the fans will have to think of another way to keep their show alive, or at least undead.

Update: Nikke now says that MRC has passed on Moonlight. Sorry folks.

This is the most creative show that has been introduced in ten years; all of the young people I know watch it. It is something fans of all ages enjoy and relate to. Think of the marketing opportunities.

I hope someone will pick up the show. I couldn't wait until Friday night to watch Moonlight. It would be terrible to lose another great show forever. CW, I watch Charmed and Gilmore Girls without missing an episode, so please bring on the Moonlight and I will do the same.

CBS is polling Moonlight fans for demographic information. We don’t know their ultimate goal here, but we are cautiously optimistic. All you need to do is call 818-655-1779 and leave your age, city & state on voice mail. They will stop taking calls at 6PM Pacific EASTERN today (Friday, May 16), so make sure you call in ASAP!

Don't know if it will help, but try leaving feedback at CBS. I found a feedback link at the bottom of the screen at www.cbs.com/info/schedule/index.php.P

Can choose Moonlight specifically for feedback. Maybe if enough requests were made we could get another season.

I hope MCR do buy the show and air it on the CW, Moonlight obviously has a strong fan base, which stretches the globe (in relation to Alex Weprin on May 14, 2008, weren’t you ever told, size doesn’t matter). Don’t the networks realise that constantly cancelling shows mid season due to ratings in America, is beginning to get on peoples nerves. If networks don’t start taking into account global audiences, they may just find the only place their shows will be watched is in America. The Writer’s Strike in America hit hard, is it surprising that people aren’t tuning in, isn’t that why you have to publicise shows, do re-runs etc. The Moonlight fans in America have been amazing and their loyalty alone should be rewarded not taken for granted, they pulled of a PR coup with the blood drive.

Alright Media Rights Capital! Step up and do the smart business thing. Pick up "Moonlight" with its built-in fan base. I'm not a teeny bopper and even in this economy, I have discretionary money to spend and I'm a big "Moonlight" fan. I watch "Supernatural" and "Smallville" AND "Moonlight" just because they're not crime procedurals, [non]-reality shows or "American Idol" clones. Take it and run with it.

Nina Tassler is probably pressuring them to NOT pick-up the show so she and the network don't look stupid. The CW would get a lot of loyal viewers if it picked-up Moonlight!!!!!!!!!

Who knows how great the ratings for Moonlight could be with promotion from a network instead of just its fans. Gossip Girl has been so highly touted, it's interesting to hear that Moonlight has had better ratings than that.

thanks for your article, God willing someone will realize what a goldmine this show can be for a network that actually advertises it. People complain about the ratings but they dont mention that CBS never really advertised this show its only fan support that helped it win its time slot every week.
