Long Live the ‘King’

February 20, 2007

True critical praise may have eluded King of Queens over the years, but the CBS sitcom appears to have scored some hipster-cred immortality. In its ninth and final season, King turns up in the first single on the upcoming album from power-pop hipsters Fountains of Wayne. The brains behind the ubiquitous “Stacy’s Mom” tune, FoW’s “Someone to Love” name-checks Doug, Carrie and the gang in the fourth stanza:

Beth McKenzie got the job of her dreams
Retouching photos for a magazine aimed at teens

It’s Thursday night she should be out on the scene
But she’s sitting at home watching "The King of Queens”

The New York-based band sounds like it's been taking in a lot of television on tour; the album, due out in April, is titled “Traffic & Weather.”

King of Queens was also mentioned in Weird Al Yankovic's song "Couch Potato" (parody of Eminem's "Lose Yourself") several years ago, but the reference wasn't exactly a favorable shout-out...
