Don Imus on Al Sharpton's Radio Show-Liveblogging
When Don Imus made his now infamous and offensive "nappy haired ho's" comment last week, he probably did not foresee himself in the kind of controversy he is currently embroiled in. Imus has apologized, but this has not changed reverend Al Sharpton's position that Imus should be fired. As I write this, Imus is preparing to appear on Sharpton's radio show. I will be liveblogging the exchange:
1:50 PM: The big debate between Imus and Sharpton seems to be about intent. Imus says he did not intend to be offensive, but that what he said certainly was. Sharpton is arguing that intent is not the issue, and that whether Imus is a good guy or a bad guy is irrelevant. He is saying the comment, regardless of who says it, should bring about repercussions.
2:08 PM: Reverend Sharpton is saying that there need to be repercussions, and that if Imus were to get away with what he said, it may set a precedent for the future. Imus says that he is not coming out of this unscathed, and that the press coverage he has been receiving has done a tremendous amount of damage to his reputation, He says the embarrassment it has caused him is damage enough.
2:12PM: Things are getting a little testy. Bryan Monroe, President of the National Association of Black Journalists, made a comment that Imus viewed as an ad-hominem.-
Clearly there is a disconnect between what Imus believes is appropriate repercussions for what he said and what Sharpton thinks the repercussions should be. Considering the context and the format– broadcast radio with a simulcast on cable– what should be done? Should Imus be fired? Should he be suspended? Or is the disparaging coverage punishment enough? Howard Stern, no stranger to saying controversial things, took the jump to satellite radio to avoid the problems Imus has found himself in. Perhaps Imus could follow? Only time will tell.

What I want to know is why does everything have to be racial? I'm a white girl and have knappy hair. Who cares!! I've been called a ho and a lot worse, but do you see me getting an apology on national tv or radio. No, I think not; maybe my skin is the wrong color. I think the "Reverend" needs to take a step back and think about the One he is supposed to be serving, which in my opinion he is so busy with his racial issues that he is too busy to serve the Lord. Jesus was called names, spit on, beaten and all manner of other atrocities, but did anyone hear Him calling racism? No, he turned the other cheek and even died for those that persecuted Him. I'm not suggesting that anyone needs to be crucified or punished, I'm just saying, "MR. SHARPTON GET A NEW SOAP BOX THIS RACIAL ONE IS GETTING OLD!"

Ok, so let's get to what the Imus issue really is. What IS the issuse really? Is the fact he called the Rutgers team nappy headed the issue? They have probably been called worse by their friends and family. Is it a black / white issue where a white radio host called them that? Maybe. But who's really at fault here? Should Imus have been fired? I don't think so. Should he have been reprimanded and fined large fines? yes I do. I heard a black reporter on the today show say that Imus had attacked him personally on the air. did it bother him? no. why? because as he put it "Imus is not so powerful to be able to destroy me with just a few words".So who's starting all these mini fires of discontenet, and believe me they were started way before the Imus issue ever came up. Besides Imus and his comments who has popped up in the news in "defense" of these girls who were "scarred for life " because of a few words. 2 people. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. A question..... what would Martin Luther King Jr. think of the way the supposed leaders of the black community are acting these days. These men are running around doing more harm and stirring up more fires to separate the community than to help put it together. Those 2 are "appalled" at the comments of Imus against those black team mates and they are scarred for life because of a few words. These girls and their coach "just want this whole thing to go away" in their own words. When? Right after they go on Oprah and say they are scarred for life? Yeah, that's making it go away.
Where was their outrage when a black girl accused the Duke Players of rape and then subsequently recanted her statement and basically said it didn't happen? Where was their outrage that those boys had been unfairly accused? You want scarred for life? Those boys will have that stigma following them for the rest of their life.
You want scarred for life??/ Tell those girls, their coach, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton to go find a survivor of the holocaust................. Now THAT'S someone who is scarred for life.

It is time to back America from being held hostage by the likes of Sharpton and Jackson. BLACK people must wake up and use their brains not mob intimidation and gang tactics employed by these so called Reverends. Their agenda is to divide this country and polarize America back into a Civil War . Our jails are full of black people who commit crimes against whites do to the views of Sharpton/Jackson. What is Barrack Hussein Obama going to do if he gets elected????????
Wally commented:
what ever happened to FREEDOM OF SPEECH, aren't we suppossed to be free to say what ever we want, who ever doesn't want to hear it, cover his/her ears, this is a free country and should stay and act as such, BLACK PEOPLE needs to stop acting indignate when some one else makes coments on them because if they don't respect themselves, they can't expect someone else to respect them.

Well, they fired him. Sad.
The special interests of the left kept hammering away until the cowardly execs caved in and knuckled under. In the case of white Caucasian men, the first amendment and free speech don't apply . They only apply to black rappers.
Looks like it is no longer worth while to be a citizen of the US if you are white. Its time for the conservative right to take back our country from these people who have way too much sway.
Jay commented:
IMUS IS AN ENTERTAINER!! WHEN ARE WE GOING TO QUIT ALLOWING THE BLACK COMMUNITY TO TAKE AWAY THE RIGHT TO FREE SPEACH...DO YOU THINK FOR ONE MINUTE THAT IF A BLACK ENTERTAINER OR ANY ENTERTAINER FOR THAT MATTER SAID "WHITE TRASH" OR "CRACKER" THAT ANY OF THE LEFT MEDIA WOULD EVEN MENTION OR NOTICE IT?? IM SICK OF WHINERS.
molene commented:
i think imus was derogatory towards the rutgers team because they were losers, in sports first place is the only place, and why do the white girls have to be there, they aren't nappy headed and if being called a ho bothers you you must not listen to rap music
Allancea commented:
Let me, a black woman who has watched Imus alot say this: Imus is on television because of his shock jock status. I understand this is just like Howard Stern. However, what really offended me about the whole conversation, as a black person and a woman, is that these women, are women who are doing what everyone considers as the "right" thing to do. They come from all walks, but they have worked hard to get the grades needed to play and graduate. They overcame so much to even get there. Why is it that because they are "nappy head" they are so how considered beneath anyone else. Hey, thats how black women are born, and there is great beauty in that. Also, they havent done anything close to what a "ho" would do. They are not walking around half naked or anything. And yet, they were degraded. They did not deserve it and Imus should be required to try and make it right with THEM. Yes, it hurt me, but he owes them.
Linda commented:
Dear Reverend Sharpton,
Keep the pressure on Imus. I am a white women and I was offened. Nothing Imus can do will ever make this right except disappear! He has no respect for women to point out the obvious. He has been allowed unteathered by the network and now its time to pay the piper! Go Rutgers!
Kim Kentucky commented:
I am sick of seeing Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson everyday on TV! Enough! They need to be worried about all the homeless and starving kids in America. Instead they are worried about a bunch of kids who I am sure got more help to go to Rutgers because of their skin color. What ever happened to turn the other cheek Holymen? That must only apply when you are white and insulted by a black person!
Fire Imus commented:
And i guess it was ok for them to say that people are more likely to see Venus and Serena Williams in a National Geographic than a Playboy...comments?
Angela commented:
I never reply to these Blog's but I specifically had to find one to comment on this. Al & Jesse both need to get off it. Why is it that these RAPPERS can call a woman a bitch and a hoe over & over again on a song, sing about it all freaking day long on the radio degrading our black women BUT because a white man chose to call them nappy headed hoes it a crime!!!!! Something is seriously wrong here. You march 50 protesters out in front of CBS for that? Al & Jesse, you are fighting the WRONG BATTLE!!!
1STAMENDER commented:
Imus made a mistake while Sharpton and Jackson make a conscious effort to lie and deceive. Both of the "Reverends" are going to HELL in the end in my opinion. Maybe the big ol Al will finally lose some weight down there and Jesse will be MIchael Jackson's boytoy down there.
Rhonda commented:
I am truly disgusted with the comment made by Mr. Imus. However, who gives Rev. Sharpton the authority to be judge and jury on Mr. Imus' comment. I do feel that Mr. Imus must be held accountable for his comments, and that he does sincerely owe an apology to the team, but I do not feel that Rev. Sharpton should feel that it his duty to bring this incident to the attention of the entire free world. I am sure that if anyone searched deep enough the Rev. Sharpton has made some negative comments and mistakes of his own at some point and time in his life. The Rev. Sharpton himself should know that all of God's children are forgiven for mistakes they make. I do believe that Mr. Imus is sincere about his apologies. I personally have not listened to Mr. Imus show, but I feel that every human being only has to answer to God for their actions, and that anyone can be forgiven. I also believe that Rev. Sharpton should apologize to Mr. Imus, for thinking and acting as though he is a supreme being that Mr. Imus has to answer to. As far as I am concerned, Mr. Imus made his apology to the team, and the only other person that he has to ask forgiveness from is God Almighty. It is up to the rest of us as human beings to be forgiving and allow Mr. Imus to prove himself to be a quality journalist.

I think it is time for everybody sit back and relax a little bit. If there is anyone left that doesn't realize that the self appointed reverends and leaders live on topics like this and love to chew up and spit out individuals like Imus and or Kramer from the Seinfield series. Thinkgs are a little to lopsided for me!!
Disgusted with Rutgers commented:
Imus's show is one of the best there is on radio. He lampoons everyone and he takes it as well with complete poise and grace. This is the format of the show and if a group of whiny brats in New Jersey don't like it then tough. Maybe they should listen to the lyrics of some of the trash music on their Ipods before whining about Imus.
Imus is a true American - a role model. Unlike the disgraceful spoiled crybabies at Rutgers. I suggest they get out of class once in a while and get a little class.
charlie/norfolk commented:
I can't help but think that mr. sharpton should start taking offense to other statements that people make, after all it is being suggested that there may be some other ethnicity lurking in his bloodstream. i feel that he needs to quit grandstanding and pay attention to some of the other issues in america. i never heard an apology for his disruption of an entire nation with the tawana fiasco, but he got his notoriety from that. as far as jesse jackson, did he ever face charges for the alleged theft of funds for his girlfriend who had his child? is he still spitting in other people's food? let's relax a little, look at what imus has done. he has paid his dues in ways that most people can't even comprehend. and i can only hope that he stays in the public eye and does not go away. let's all make our own lists of who has done what and hope they all continue to do good and not spend all this energy on how they have stumbled from time to time. thanks for reading this. it is only my opinion.

Hey, does anyone remember Jimmy "The Greek"? Please explain to me what the difference is. Yes, Twana Brawley ruined someone's life & Jackson's Himie town coment was totally unacceptable, but do we really need to count how many injustices each side has done to come up with some kind of justification to Imus' inability to adapt to his audience? He's been making the same tired jokes for years. Yes, I agree with Fred/Louisiana; he has done some good in his life. And he should continue to do those good things even after he retires this year. Not because he's a racist, but because he can't adapt to today's audience. I used to listen to his show too. But I tried to listen again last year and nothing has changed from when I listened in NJ. I need something new.

What is really the Shame of all of this is that Don will begin to realize that all his Liberal Call In Guests are letting hin swing in the wind, News week guy was on Tucker On MSNBC and pretty much said that he had to Review his Options on being on the show.
Without the comedy bits and any News guests this show is doomed
I just think it got that crazy that day because of Sids comments which triggered the whole thing
Don will someday realize that his Friends are going to let him twist in the wind

Fred/Louisiana commented:
As a fan of Imus In Morning for the past several years I have come to know and appreciate Don Imus for what he is – “A Teddy Bear in armor”. While I have not always agreed with his offensive diatribes or his political attacks, I have come to know that he is a man who exemplifies the “Courage of Conviction”. He is unwavering in his commitment to what is decent and right albeit at the expense of those whom he targets.
Beneath his crusty exterior and superficial rants lives the soul of a good and decent man who has an undying and passionate loyalty to the men and women who bravely serve our country and a compassionate commitment to the cancer stricken children who visit and work on the Imus Ranch. Additionally, his work (and that of his wife) toward raising the awareness of autism and the void which exists in its treatment and his commitment to the environment are truly representative of a caring individual. Granted, he “plays to the crowd” with his tirades, but at the end of the day it is meant to shatter the complacency toward so many social ills which seems to grip our country. This is far, far better than sitting in apathetic silence.
Don Imus walks the walk, he talks the talk; he screwed up with his Rutgers comment, he sincerely apologized without excuses. His handling of this matter has been exemplary. Others in the public eye should take note on how to accept responsibility for one’s actions or words.
Don Imus, like all of us is imperfect, a “struggling sinner” if you will. I doubt if there is anyone out there who can justify casting the first stone.
As for WFAN's likely concern of losing sponsors over this, I would say lose them. Those sponsors who know and appreciate Don for what he truly represents will stick with you and those who jump ship will be replaced by others who recognize the sense of decency Don Imus truly represents.
Fred/Seattle commented:
Martha - Well, I think you need to go back to my first statement of "I don't think he is a racist", I just think he's out of touch and his humor is outdated so it's time for him to retire. Even before his recent statement I thought it was time for him to retire. There was a time he was funny; not so much anymore. I think you need to take a deep breath and not take things so seriously. You sound upset. As for me being dumber than you thought, you don't know me personally so you have no idea whether I'm dumb or not, (by the way, my wife would agree with you sometimes). I would also like to point out the fact that you kind of hit the nail on the head when you said that black people don't listen to the Imus show...I wonder why...is it because of the racist remarks, or because he's just not funny? I pick the latter, because like I said earlier, I don't think in his heart he is racist. I would also substitute the words "black people" with "most people". I'm sure if you looked at his ratings over the past few years you would see that they are just not the same as they used to be.
Martha Tyler commented:
Hey there Fred - you're dumber than i thought. black people even don't watch or listen to imus and you don't either and therefore have no right to an opinion. i watch it all the time - yes, sometimes they are over the top but EVERYONE is anymore you goofball. imus is no more a racist or biggot than i am. just because some people can laugh at ourselves and others and not get all bent out of shape about it doesn't mean you're a racist or biggot. if you don't want to watch or listen to him, exercise your freedom of choice and change the channel.
i'm not saying what he said was politically correct and i particularly don't care about that every breath i take. it was meant to be a freaking joke and if people can't get a grip on the difference between intentionally trying to hurt someone and unintentional then then that's just the way that goes. get the chip off your shoulder.
RadioFanNJ commented:
Imus abuses everybody and usually softens later on. While the humor is edgy his knowledge and political acumen are usually right on and straightforward. Wasn't it Rev. Jackson who referred to NYC as hymeytown? that was horrendous but he deserved another chance.
Fred/Seattle commented:
The last two postings made my point exactly. Good-'ol-boy locker room humor that was accepted before is no longer accepted, or funny today. That's all he knows how to do; so I think his time has passed. It's time to bring in some new blood. BTW: Martha, (first of all the N word is not acceptable in ANY context, regardless of who is saying it), if I need to explain why it's wrong for a white person to use the "N" word as opposed to a black person using it, then you will never understand it and I will just be wasting my time and effort. Ben: Just because other racial groups didn't call Imus out on his previous "jokes" doesn't make those jokes right. Someone is bound to call him out on it and it just happens to have happened now. I think it has something to do with the current political environment and the state our country is in and has been in for the last 6 years.
Eddie Deeb commented:
How come only the N people are offended when assualted by the likes of Imus? The J people and the M people as well as the C,L,G and P people get it as often. What gives? What da dilly? And by the way, how is Tawana Brawley doing these days? Stay what you is and peace......
Ben commented:
Just wanted to say that I have been listening to Imus for years. I must say that from the start Imus has been offensive. He has offended Jews, Blacks, Gays, and just about everyone else. That is what he does. In all his time on the air, why hasn't Sharpton or anyone else made an issue about what he has said until now. In my opinion, this situation is making Sharpton and other black advocats look bad. If Sharpton is truly offended, why hasn't he advocated for other groups that Imus has offended? Why now? Why haven't jewish groups or gay groups come foward? Is it because they know that he is not serious? It seems to me that Sharpton is the kind of person who sits on the sidelines and waits to make headlines. Martin Luther King was not just an advocate for blacks, he was an advocate for all. Sharpton needs to make up his mind as to whether or not blacks are the only ones worthy of his advocacy. There are far too many other issues effecting the black community. As a teacher in the inner city, I can say first hand that this entire day of energy could have been better focused on city schools systems throughout the country, as well as after school programs and health programs that are being cut on a daily basis. Come on Sharpton, do your job, and pick your battles. You're making a mockery of the civil rights movement. Not to mention... Haven't you appeared on his show before? Is this really the first time that you've noticed his humor?
Martha Tyler commented:
Y'all should chill out for just a minute. I have been watching the Imus show since 1997 - for the most part it is a scream and is simply men's locker room talk. They try to be funny and sometimes go overboard which he clearly admits and clearly says will change. He is a good person and has done a lot of good for many, many people. He takes those things in life seriously too.
The reason I say to chill out is because I don't understand why it is okay for a black person to say the things white people are not supposed to say - it's 'off color and out of bounds' for white people. Take Chris Rock on the Bill Maher show recently. Bill Maher was being respectful when asking Chris Rock about his feelings about Michael Richards using the N word and Chris Rock said 'He didn't say the N word, he said Nigger'...and everyone has a HUGE belly laugh. What gives?
Fred/Seattle commented:
Imus is an old hack who is out of touch with the mains stream. I can't believe anyone actually still listens to the show, let alone watches it on TV?!
Nevertheless, I don't think he's a racist. I just think this is a sign that he has lost touch with what is funny and acceptable humor today as opposed to funny and acceptable humor back in his hay day. He's done and should just retire; if not now, then some time in the near future.
