RIP Jerry Girard

March 27, 2007

We're sorry to hear of the passing of longtime New York sportscaster Jerry Girard. Girard was on WPIX, and was the classic pre-ESPN sports guy: schtik-free sports commentary delivered tartly and smartly and with a thick Bronx accent.

He died of cancer yesterday in Westchester, New York. The NY Times has the obit.

I watched Jerry Girard in the 70's 80's in NYC on WPIX, HE WAS LOVED by all his family, colleagues, staff and fans....Jerry was everything coll about sportscasting and TV before the morons at Bristol clown college and these other SHTICK-FEST wanna be's (see Craig Carton) Many will try but all will fail at emulating one Mr. Jerry Girard!
