'The Daily Show' Welcomes GOP to the Twin Cities

August 24, 2008

With the Republican National Convention set to kick off Sept. 1 in Minneapolis-St. Paul, The Daily Show With Jon Stewart has already kicked off efforts to welcome GOP delegates to the Twin Cities.

Having arrived just yesterday in Minneapolis (for the Minnesota State Fair, of course, not the convention), I can report that the Comedy Central show has erected a can’t-miss-it billboard off of I-494 that greets motorists leaving the MSP airport. Beneath a photo of the Daily Show crew is the salutation: “Welcome, rich white oligarchs.”

"Welcome, Rich White Oligarchs"
I was driving, so I couldn’t get a photo, but I did find one courtesy of "The Zeppelin’s" Flickr page.

As far as I can tell, this went up in the past couple days. Haven’t found an equivalent billboard welcoming “latte-sipping, arugula-munching” delegates to the Democratic National Convention in Denver, which starts tomorrow.

Blackstone, comparing Barak Obama to Fidel Castro is absurd. More appropriate analogies: The change that Thomas Jefferson and colleagues wanted, the change in the form of the New Deal that FDR thought the nation needed after the depression, the change that LBJ saw as necessary to help the poor and struggling.

but Fidel Castro... give me a break. If there is anyone advocating the elimination of the US government it is the GOP.

Blackstone makes an excellent point. I suppose based strictly on income I would be listed in the poverty level in the US which seems ridiculous to me. I live simply, and within my means, and feel pretty dam lucky. Still, it's not hating America or thinking it sucks to want things to get better. It's not about giving things to people who won't work. It's about making more accessible to people who do. It's about helping to create more opportunities for more people, who still have to earn them.

Blackstone hit the nail on the head. Live within your means, educate yourself and make smart decisions and do not feel that you are owed anything. Most other countries would not give you the time of day that this country does for those in need.

Blackstone commented:

The Daily show is very much tongue in cheek. However, the successful do pay most of the taxes. The opportunity to succeed has been a bedrock in making this the greatest country in the history of man.

In the late 50's, Cuba wanted change and some change was needed, but look at what they ended up with. Blindly following a person for the sake of change without substance is the ultimate display of foolishness. If everything is so bad in the U. S. then why are 100,000's of people trying to come here and not many are leaving. By almost any standard, the poor in the U. S. would be quite comfortable in most Third World countries.

People need to grow up and realize that there is no free lunch and that something given to them is coming from someone else. Take medical insurance for example, many people enjoy and own mobile phones, big screen TV's, IPOD's and a whole list of consumer items, but cannot afford insurance premiums for their families. So it has to be everyone else's fault that they don't have insurance where in reality it is their failure to make insurance a priority. Don't forget there are plenty of safety nets for the truly needy.

So if you are whining for change go grab a mirror and take a good long look at yourself. The only change with any lasting effect comes realizing that you are responsible for yourself!! And if you still feel like the U.S sucks then it starts with the image in the mirror your holding.

The daily show is the only intelligent show on TV in recent history. "Reality shows" are geared towards those minds with the least common denominator. Jon Stewart is witty, intelligent and very funny. If it was not for his show, I would not turn my TV on. Fox is the voice of the white, rich republicans, CNN and other so called news stations are nothing more that parrots of party lines.
Jon's show is beacon that lights the darkness caused by this administration.

And I, as a liberal, would have laughed out loud, because it's true. Stewart and his crew have certainly not given Dems and liberals a free pass the last few years. I remember Stewart's comment about a MoveOn.org TV ad: "MoveOn.org - still able to make even people who basically agree with them... squirm."

Ron Dibble's takedown of the Berkeley Code Pink demonstration, for example, was brutal - and hilarious.

Unfortunately, nameless user, I strongly agree with you. China will eventually be the major superpower in the world. We simply will not be able to compete with a nation that has 5 times the population that we have and all those workers at their disposal. Perhaps if the greed of the republicants and fascists (sorry, sometimes I forget they are one and the same) wasn't as great as it currently is, we could forget cheap labor, begin to get things made in America again, and offer the world quality american-made products as a direct contrast to much of the crap made in China. The greed of these mostly rich, old, white men won't allow America to return to greatness. They could care less because you see, this won't happen overnight. It will take decades and they will all be gone so why should they care. Same thing for the environment, etc. America, centuries from now will be seen as an experiment of what a melting pot of diverse people could accomplish together. A great nation that served as an example to the rest of the world, but alas, not for long enough and failed because of the stupidity of many of it's people who stood by blindly and let themselves get raped, and pilloraged by the people they put in power. All because of stupid wedge issues like abortion, guns, etc., instead of seeing the bigger picture.

Perhaps you're exposed to a better class of Republicqan than those I'm surrounded by in southern Ohio...but I doubt it.

"Conservative principles would be things like, less government involvement, fewer government programs that eat up tax dollars and lean toward socialism."

These things you cite are as mythical as the predation of white women by black politicians as has been unsubtly promoted in RNC commercials recently, and are as clearly based on fears and fundamental misunderstandings of how the world actually works.

"government involvement", like the FDA ensuring low levels of harmful bateria in beef? or the establishment of air-traffic safety standards? "Socialism" like stop lights and fire departments?

...and what about "government programs that eat up tax dollars", like an illegal, wholly irrational occupation of a foreign country, based on lies and racism, that costs 15 billion dollars a month?

No, your Republicans, and all too many Democrats, couldn't think their way out of a paper bag - unless they thought a black person was in there with them.

I think you're underestimating them. I have a few conservative friends I talk to on a regular basis and they are smart and articulate. Conservative principles would be things like, less government involvement, fewer government programs that eat up tax dollars and lean toward socialism. They don't like Bush and hope that McCain will return to what they see as the foundations of the GOP. I don't agree with them but I do understand because we've taken the time to listen to each other. I despise the fear mongering dishonest BS that is being used to influence people and I agree it's working too well. I just think the best way to combat it is to arm yourself with the facts and keep asserting them. Find the common ground of hope for a better society for future generations.
I also know a few die hards who simply refuse to look beyond labels and are convinced liberal is a curse word. I find the liberal mirror of that close minded attitude equally offensive.

Dan Brayall,

Sure, I see your point; although I strongly dispute that the majority of Republican voters are loyal in any way to "conservative principals". In fact, if asked to name a few of these principals they might cite a few vague words like "patriotism" or "faith", or even go so far as to mention "fiscal responsibility" (which is hugely ironic, considering the trillion-dollar fiasco their votes have supported in Iraq), but most of them vote on unfounded media-engendered fears of blacks, mexicans, athiests, and commies.

Dan Brayall commented:

The people I'm defending are American citizens with a right to vote their conscience even if you and I don't agree. Looking down your nose at them morally or intellectually is clearly not the answer. Finding our common issues and concerns through patient and persistent communication will yield better results. Criticizing Bush and cronies, exposing their corruption and the corruption of party leaders is a valid approach. {while being willing to condemn corruption among the Dems as well} Blanket attacks on anyone who is called republican or conservative is just as self destructive and foolish as anything you imagine they are doing.
At this point most Republicans aren't happy with Bush and will be glad to see him go. They still retain hope and loyalty to the GOP and conservative principles. That's their right and something we should respect if we honor the nature of our democratic republic. The job is to convince enough of them that McCain is too similar to Bush and Obama, while imperfect, will be the better choice in this election. Blanket insults won't do that and in fact make things worse. I assume that's not your goal.

Such people should not be trusted with a sharp pair of scissors. It may not be constructive to insult middle- and working-class Republicans, but the self destructive behavior represented by their wedge-issue voting certainly does not engender respect. The people you defend are the serfs of the oligarchs cited by the billboard.

Also, although the sign may give us a laugh it is a bit simple and insulting to all the hard working average folks who belong to the Republican party. We need liberals, conservatives, and moderates working together and communicating to truly address the issues. More polarization and treating our fellow citizens as the enemy or dimwitted simply because they see things differently does not solve problems. It's time for both parties to do some serious house cleaning and it's time for members of both parties and independents to insist of some changes by using the ballot box to separate the wheat form the chaff. Blind party loyalty won't cut it for either side.

You may have noticed an of DS Jon calling out the main stream media for doing a lousy job. He's right on. Those of us independent thinkers who enjoy the show have also seen him take pot shots at the Dems including Obama. It's an unfortunate truth that a fake news show may be the most honest one.
