Conan's ad about an ad: A DVR buster

May 29, 2009

They say the best kind of advertising entertains rather than interrupts. Big Ups then to Budweiser and NBC’s marketing department for their Conan O’Brien commercial, so compelling it’s a pure DVR buster. The spot premiered in the Super Bowl and is again making the rounds ahead of the comedian’s Monday debut on The Tonight Show.

The spot stars Conan as he’s talked into doing a beer commercial which will only air in Sweden. He’s dressed in spandex and given a catch-phrase ‘Vroom Vroom Party Starter.’ When it airs on a big screen in Times Square he’s horrified.

It’s a great example of co-op marketing at its best. Everybody get something out of it: Comedy Central’s ad breaks get a lift, Conan and Budweiser promote their goods, and for a change even the viewer gets something out of it.
