Daily DigVid Review: Yahoo! Dumps MSFT, Hooks Up with Google

Thank God they kept it short and sweet: I’m just going to stick with this endless relationship metaphor and say that Yahoo! and Google went ahead and announced that they are moving in together, but don’t feel ready to make a lifetime commitment. I feel a little better about this because the New York Times is doing it too. Anyway, after all this strum und drang the deal is relatively simple: Google will provide Yahoo! with ads on some search results and the two will split the revenue. The two also will make their IM applications interoperable, which they should have done years ago. Analysts across the Web say that should immediately result in improved cash flow for Yahoo!, which in turn should boost the company’s floundering stock price. Still, the deal won’t go into effect for 3 ½ months in order to give the Justice Dept. time to review it.
MySpace is undergoing a revamp, with a major redesign coming next week, according to CNET. A number of features are being tweaked, including the homepage, navigation tools, profile editor, search features and the MySpaceTV player. I have to say that there’s a lot I would improve about MySpace. I’ve always found its navigation and editing tools really clunky so we’ll see what this relaunch brings.
Tribe Pictures is creating an original Web series called "Get Fit with Alyson," starring Alyson Stoner of Disney's upcoming film "Camp Rock," as well as "Cheaper by the Dozen 1 & 2," and The Disney Channel's "Suite Life of Zack and Cody." The series, comprised of three-minute Webisodes, premieres on this Monday at the appropriately named Web site www.getfitwithalyson.com. More original content -- called "Get Wii Fit with Alyson "-- is being produced exclusively for the Nintendo Channel and will be available only through the Wii Internet connecton at www.nintendo.com/wii/channels/nintendochannel.com. Young fans -- and me, if I would ever just suck it up and get a Wii -- can work out with Alyson on their Wii Fit boards.
And it's not necessarily relevant to this blog, but a sad and far-too-premature farewell to NBC's Tim Russert, who I never had the privilege of meeting, but who I always admired from afar. The upcoming history-making election will not be the same without him.
