CBS Gets a little bit scary
October 10, 2007

In what I expect to ultimately be so many of these announcements that I no longer will be willing to write about them, CBS is introducing an original Web series called How to Survive a Horror Movie: All the Skills to Dodge the Kills. I think that was the subtext of the Scream movies, but nonetheless it’s a theme that horror enthusiasts love.

I, not being in any way a horror enthusiast, have no clue but it seems like a fun premise for original content that falls right around Halloween. The 18 episodes have titles such as “How to Tell if You Have Been Dead Since the Beginning of the Movie,” “Seven Things to Never, Ever, Ever Put in a Child’s Room,” and “How to Defeat a Killer Doll.”

CBS will distribute the series for free on dodgethekills.com, CBS.com and the CBS Audience Network. CBS Interactive partnered with Quirk Books to create the series, based on the book of the same name by Seth Grahame-Smith, who also wrote and directed the Web series. Two new episodes of the series will appear each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday through Oct. 25. (CBS makes the point that this is a total of 6 episodes for 3 weeks or 666. Or 18, depending on how you do math.)

How to Survive a Horror Movie is just the latest entry in CBS’ growing list of original Web fare, which also includes Clark and Michael, starring Superbad’s Michael Cera and Greek’s Clark Duke, among others.

I stand by my earlier assertion that all this Web distribution should be a boon for entrepreneurial producers, but I wonder how any of it will ever be able to rise through the top. There’s an infinite amount of content available, but there’s a very finite amount of time available to watch it.
