Social networks: enough already!
February 13, 2008

Is there anything online these days that doesn’t come with a social network attached?

As part of its new digital strategy, MTV is beefing up its interactivity, including finally adding the social networking features that we’ve all come to expect.

MTV was thwarted (and Tom Freston fired) in 2005 when Viacom lost MySpace to News Corp. Still, if just one little Internet show like Quarterlife can build a fully-featured social network, MTV certainly can and probably should have two years ago. MTV is the perfect demo for such a thing, which it clearly realizes since Quarterlife is getting a quick premiere on MTV at 4:30 pm ET on Tuesday, Feb. 26, the afternoon before the off-Internet show opens on NBC.

That said, building profiles all the time is time-consuming and often pointless. I have a profile on MySpace – which I put together because I needed to research bands – but now there’s also Facebook and LinkedIn and so on and so forth and they all want profiles from me. Forget it!

Really, each person should just be allotted one central location on the Web where they post whatever they want about themselves, and then they should be able to use that profile to link to all others. That would provide quick and easy interactivity without all the extra and redundant work.
