[Red Alert From Hollywood’s Working Class] Many of the workers in Hollywood that do not have a stake in the WGA/AMPTP negotiations have had it up to here with the strike. A number of businesses that rely on entertainment clients have had to lay off workers, cancel vacations, and generally hope that everything gets resolved soon.
So with hundreds, and potentially thousands, of workers in related fields out of work, how long before one side buckles? and which side will break first?
[Not so Fast] Of course, now that talks have broken down between the two sides, it is looking more and more likely that we are in this for the long haul, and it is looking more and more likely that the TV industry is going to be turned on its head when all is said and done.
[Kevin Martin: “Lone Operator”] FCC Chairman Kevin Martin is in a unique position. He has been criticized by all four of his fellow commissioners, and Democrats and Republicans alike have found reason to blame him for what they see as failures. Martin says that he is being criticized for having the FCC tackle controversial topics. One thing is for certain, Martin has a gameplan, but how far it will go remains to be seen.
[I Want My (dental)!] MTV Networks “permalancers”, freelance employees who effectively work full time for the company, are staging a walkout with some of their fully employed brethren over cuts to health and dental plans, as well as ending 401k programs. Employees were notified of the changes when picking up initiations to the holiday party, and were required to sign the paperwork before being explained what the changes were. How endearing.
[16-0 a No Go? At Least You Can Get a Steak] New England Patriots owner Bob Kraft is teaming up with CBS to open a new restaurant adjacent to Gillette Stadium in suburban Massachusetts. There will be undreds of HD monitors and rooms dedicated to CBS franchises such as The Late Show with David Letterman and I Love Lucy.
Here’s hoping they don’t open up a CSI themed room.
