Family Court: The Cases
April 17, 2008
Family Court with Judge Penny will allow the viewer to not only be entertained, but will also allow the viewer to gain knowledge in the areas that will be covered on the show. The exciting aspect of the show is that many of the circumstances that the litigants will bring before me should be relatable to the viewers. Everyone has faced issues in family relationships at some time in their lives. Many times these are the most challenging matters to deal with because there is a great deal of emotion involved. These cases include: reckless parenting, out of control teenagers, spousal disputes, as well as disputes among family members or live-in partners. The cases will run the gamut; however, all of the cases will prove interesting and provocative because they all deal with the realities many people are facing day to day.
As the judge, I will approach the cases, obviously with an open mind, but also with a focus on getting to the bottom of the real issues. What is often needed to help resolve these matters is “straight talk” that gives the litigants a reality check from someone who has no leanings whatsoever to either side. Each litigant comes to court believing that he or she is right. The Judge is the impartial voice that can cut through the litigants’ resentment and anger and get to the real issue. Additionally, I will go beyond the case that is presented and search for the real story. It has been my experience for these many years that I have served as a Judge that everybody who comes to court usually has a story to tell. Their story may serve as the catalyst for the foundation of the problem that is before the Court.
It takes patience to be a good judge, but more importantly, to be a great judge it takes someone who cares. As Family Court with Judge Penny raises the bar with regard to court shows, it is certainly my goal that the viewer will have the opportunity to not only be entertained, but to be given the chance to walk away after each episode learning something or being able to apply what they learned to a situation that they may be dealing with in their everyday lives.
