Family Court with Judge Penny
March 17, 2008
“Court remains a vital genre both for daytime programming on nontraditional affiliates and for traditional affiliates in early-fringe”, said Jim Curtin, Senior Programmer & Director of Programming for Katz Television just ahead if this year’s NATPE convention. Indeed, court shows are a reliable staple in daytime, delivering consistent ratings year after year. Research suggests that viewers are extremely loyal to the genre and tend to take away valuable information relevant to their own lives from watching their favorite court shows. With a payoff like that, it’s no wonder that viewers keep coming back for more.
It is against this backdrop that we came to market this season with the all new, breakthrough court series for fall 2008 – Family Court with Judge Penny. In a marketplace full of court shows that focus on commonplace disputes, Judge Penny will tackle some tough cases that other court shows avoid: domestic abuse, child custody, reckless parenting and more. But most of all, what separates Family Court from other shows is Judge Penny herself.
Prior to being appointed to the bench by then Governor Roy E. Barnes, Judge Penny Brown Reynolds served as Executive Counsel to the governor, making her the first African-American in Georgia's history to hold that position, and the only one in the entire nation. Reynolds provided legal advice to the governor on policy and legislative issues. She is a former Assistant Attorney General for the State of Georgia and a former prosecutor.
She is a member of the American Bar Association, National Association of Women Lawyers, Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys, Atlanta Black/Jewish Coalition of 100 Black Women, and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She is on the Advisory Board of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus and the Metropolitan Atlanta Coalition of Black Women, Inc. She serves as member of the board of Directors of the Atlanta Branch of the NAACP and is a distinguished member of the International Women's Forum, Inc. Most recently, Judge Reynolds was recognized for her strides and contributions as an outstanding African American during the national From Whence We Came Program sponsored by the Allstate Insurance Company; and she was also named to the Atlanta Business League's millennial list of "Atlanta's Top 100 Black Women of Influence." Judge Reynolds received her Bachelor of Science, Cum Laude, from Georgia State University after only three years of study, graduating with honors and received her Juris Doctor Degree from Georgia State University College of Law. Additionally, she was presented the Georgia State University Outstanding Student Award, the University's highest student award.
This is truly a remarkable woman. It’s hard to imagine but Judge Penny grew up as an impoverished child, raised by a single mother in New Orleans. Seemingly against all, she rose to prominence as a lawyer and jurist and is uniquely suited for family-centered cases. Emotional, inspiring and affirming – Family Court with Judge Penny will be a court show unlike any other on TV.
