Gearing up for Season 2!
January 17, 2008

The preliminary planning has begun for Merv Griffin’s Crosswords Season II.  While Season I was very successful, the intensity of a strip schedule doesn’t always allow for the creative time needed to reflect on how things can be tweaked to make a better viewing experience.  Well now that our production team has had some time to breathe, Season II promises to be bigger and better than ever.  While the essence of the game will remain the same, there will be some small but important changes that take our game to the next level and I couldn’t be more excited to get back in the studio and start taping!

And for my “soap opera” fans out there, I’m also very excited because I’ve just been asked to screen test for two different daytime dramas.  I’m not sure both will work out due to scheduling and geographic reasons (one shoots in New York, Crosswords shoots in Los Angeles), but it’s always nice to be wanted, especially in today’s environment.  It seems that with the current writer’s strike, daytime dramas are the only scripted programming still shooting.  I’ve also been approached with a starring role in an independent feature film, but everything is on hold due to the strike.  Can’t we all just get along?!  In the meantime, I’m proud to be co-hosting an important event sponsored by Aids Project Los Angeles.  It’s the longest continually running AIDS benefit in the world.  This year there will be two star-studded performances of song and dance saluting legendary pianist and composer Burt Bacharach.  The performances are March 8th and 9th.  If you’re in the Los Angeles area stop by the Wilshire Theatre in Beverly Hills and say, “hi.”  That’s all for now, I’m headed to the batting cages with my “Little Brother,” his baseball tryouts are this weekend!

I am looking forward to the new changes on the show :) I am glad that u were contacted to try out for the daytime soaps. You are a talented actor/host so who can blame them. Hopefully down the line you will be able to work in the big apple again. Till next time be well.

I wish you could listen to the fans and ask them what would be better with the game. well here are a few suggestions: Round1 50-100-150 clues 1 CROSS EXTRA Round2 100-200-300 2 C.E. Round2 200-400-600 2 C.E. Bonus round should be for a jackpot. Start it as $5,000 and raise it $2,500 each day not won. I know you did do 200-400-600 clues for a bit then changed it again. not good. too damn low coring games, even witha game when no-one I mean no-one won a single dollar. winner had -250 and didnt finish the puzzle. and tell your bosses at your production company why I have to wait 60 days for $1000 that I won in your contest in November. It's getting kind of ridiculous, but Ty one more thing, tyr not being so damn plastic on the show, loosen up some more. I know you are just a rookie in this genre of TV, but loosen up more. I am done ranting now. but best wishes on Season 2. Ill keep watching here in pittsburgh.

I like the clues very much, some are very funny and the sound effects. I don't like the spoilers stealing peole's money.

One logical round 2 tweak that could be done without radically altering either the current game play or set could be that if one of the main two contestants is incorrect, the turn automatically goes to the opponent first. If no correct answer, the spoilers can participate. I'm also putting on the table a "two strikes and out" for a spoiler/podium. Spoilers are often helped by the main two contestants eliminating other possibilities through wrong guesses and having a few more seconds to think. Other than a short-term lockout, there's no risk in trying to steal a main podium. This way, if a spoiler buzzes in and is incorrect, either by direct answer, incorrect spelling, or the time's up signal, that spoiler's podium is lit up with a strike (X). Whoever is behind that podium and gives the next incorrect answer is out of the game - potentially diminishing the number of spoilers and creating drama. Does the spoiler at the podium with one X want to risk buzzing in if not 100% sure? True, a spoiler could still answer one question and win the game, but there could be more drama.

Honestly, the only change I'd make is allow all five contestants to stay on for the entire week, and they just rotate positions from spoiler to main player every day. It has returning champs and makes the spoiler system fair. Plus cuts down on the number of contestants you need. Regardless, I and the rest of BuzzerBlog are extremely excited to see the show return in Fall 2008! Here's hoping for many more seasons.

A great show! Two things would help. A better wardrobe for Ty...although he does look nice in the 3 brown shirts he rotates...and how FRUSTRATING we don't get a brief summary of the answers in the final round. Especially when the player is a bonehead. Thanks!

The puzzle clues are too good to skip over at the end. That's the most fun part for me. You should make sure we see the answers for all the clues at the end.

I agree with keeping contestants the entire week, mainly because I've frequently seen a contestant dominate the whole game, then a spoiler comes in and takes over after the last question. I know that it's possible, but it's still a bit flawed, IMO. Either that or just keep one spoiler in the back row. Other than that, I appreciate all the hard work, keep it up!

I agree about keeping the spoilers all week. They can get used to the clues and create some great competiton. I think Ty Treadway is great, the puzzles are excellent, and the fast pace is good, because you don't expect a crosswords show to move so fast. The 30 minutes go by quickly.

No, have 5 players play one day, but let each player keep the money he earns. The person at the podium with the most money at the end also earns that total plus has a shot at the grand prize. This way a dominant player doesn't get totally shafted by a lucky spoil and everyone has a chance to earn money. If you want to build excitement and ratings ala Ken Jennings at Jeopardy, let winner come back as one of first two contestants next time.

Noticed that Timothy Parker is the Puzzle Producer in the credits. I really enjoy his USA Today puzzles. Good choice for the show. His clues are not obscure like some of the other crosswords

I, for one, am happy that Crosswords has been renewed for season 2. I wanted to try out, but decided not to. Now that I know it's been renewed, I think I'm going to try out this fall. Here's to a long, successful run.

I love the show. It is one of the very few mind-exercises on TV today. Ty needs some new, colorful shirts. The letters missed in the grand prize round should be displayed immediately as soon as the contestant's time is up. Showing the correct answers while the credits roll is a waste--no one hangs around to watch that long. Contestants should get to keep the cash they win. Higher cash prizes would make the game more fun, also.

I don't know how many shows they tape in one day, but if the rules changed and the players were on for a week, a hotel would be costly in LA. You are responsible for your hotel and your airfare. I am happy that I have a DVR to record the shows and even happier that Crosswords has been renewed. Ty is doing a good job and I agree--if a person misses any answers playing for the grand prize, they should be displayed right away so we can see the bonehead's reaction.

I believe in second chances. When a spoiler comes in and steals the podium at the last minute there should be one for the skilled player that built up the money. Maybe allow him to be a spoiler for the next week?

My husband and I just started watching the show and enjoy it very much except for the spoilers. In the past week, we saw several spoilers win at the last minute and thought that was very unfair to the person that actually built the jackpot. Please change this!

This seems kinda trivial now after I read about the AIDS benefit Ty is doing...but... You guys are so lame, do you even know what the word "Spoiler" means? lulz. I think it's great you only get one chance to win, and all your hard-earned money could be stolen at the very end, even if it's by a person who only answered one clue correctly. Adds excitement. IMO, The show is perfect just the way it is (minus the cheesy music. But it kinda adds to it). I'm so happy the show is renewed for season 2, I was wondering why it got moved from 3 to 12 and they weren't showing new episodes. Congrats!
