Raising the Bar
January 8, 2008

Our company has been extremely fortunate, since its inception, to be associated with programming, collaborators and co-workers of great substance and quality. Very early on, Josh and I were clear on the fact that companies that emphasize quality seem to not only prosper but endure, and we were very much interested in creating something that could be successful and lasting. We were known for importing highly-acclaimed, award winning scripted dramas from Canada. We actually have five of them on the air as we speak and are the largest distributor of Canadian dramatic programming in the US. One of the things that struck us about our series “Degrassi: The Next Generation” was not only the superb quality of the production, but the fact that here was a series that actually made a difference in the lives of viewers. A breakthrough dramatic half-hour dealing with substantive issues, “Degrassi” continues to help young people deal with complicated, sometimes controversial issues, even after nearly a quarter century on the air. So that’s a challenge -- high quality + making a difference -- but it’s a niche we’re proud to play in.

In the first-run arena, we launched “Merv Griffin’s Crosswords.” Working with Merv Griffin was a wonderful opportunity for us, and every step of the development process was as meticulous as one could expect. Merv and his team brought years of successful experience to the process and the end result, once again, was a high-quality product that we could all be proud of.

For 2008, we’re actually “raising the bar.” We’re introducing “Family Court with Judge Penny,” a half-hour court television strip that we believe will raise the bar for the entire genre.  First and foremost, we’ve aligned ourselves with an amazing judge, a jurist from Fulton County, Georgia whose own personal ascendency is a powerful story in itself. Raised in extreme poverty by a single mother, Penny Brown Reynolds went on to earn a law degree at Georgia State after which she became a prosecutor and ultimately counsel to the Governor of Georgia, who appointed her to the bench seven years ago. Secondly, our focus on cases that deal with families will not only resonate with daytime court viewers, but will hopefully make a difference in their lives as cases unfold that mirror their own experiences at home with their families.  High quality + making a difference... It’s definitely a challenge that we believe we’ve not only met but this time, we’ve actually “raised the bar.”
