ADDICTION...
November 6, 2007

ADDICTION…a nine letter word that describes what I feel about my job.  Addicted to the speed, addicted to the intensity, addicted to the rush of learning something new everyday.  What a privilege to stand in front of a game invented by the  “Maestro of the Game” Merv Griffin.  I only had a short time with Merv, but I can tell you this:  he loved this game.  Crossword Puzzles were his passion.  He did two every morning before he got out of bed.  Now granted when you’re a billionaire you don’t have to get out of bed as early as the rest of us, but still.  I remember talking to Merv when we were on a break during development.  I told him I didn’t understand why a man so incredibly successful in so many fields wanted to take on the demanding hours of television production again.  Weren’t there any islands he could buy or small countries he could run?  He looked at me with that trademark twinkle and he said, “I love the action.”  Pure Merv…it didn’t matter whether the cameras were on or not, he loved to entertain.  Sadly Merv left us for that great soundstage in the sky.  And as we near the end of production on our first season there are two things I know for sure…#1 Merv created great games…#2 I’m a pretty lucky guy.

I have never been hooked on doing puzzles, but I do enjoy the CROSSWORDS television game. We view it as a family and try to impress each other with our quick wit and ever-expanding vocabulary. Maybe one of these days I'll get up the nerve to try out as a contestant. Thanks Merv and thanks Ty...you two are a great 7-letter word for a winning combination: S-U-C-C-E-S-S!

I was a contestant on Merv Griffin's Crosswords (and I won, too!) and it was a completely delightful experience. The show hadn't premiered yet when my game was taped, so it was like playing in the major leagues after only learning the game that morning! But EVERY person behind the scenes was friendly and helpful, Ty is just as warm, witty and sharp off-camera as he is on the air, and I could palpably sense the joy and honor everyone felt in working on Merv's last show and furthering his legacy. All my friends and co-workers watched my game when it was broadcast last month, and everyone was wowed by how FAST and INTENSE it is. I've always liked games that emphasize brains over luck, and this show strikes the perfect balance. I still watch it regularly — it's great mental exercise! Thanks Ty, and to you and everyone at the show, keep up the great work!

This show can succeed...it just needs a little more spice. Merv was a genius and great man who has given us this creation, and this show definitely has the potential to stick around for a long time. Keep at it! And Ty, you are the game show host Rookie of the Decade! You're a natural and you're having fun, and it shows. Kudos to everyone!

I don't get a chance to watch Crosswords that often (it's on at 4pm in NY) when I'm off from work, I watch it. It's a great way to exercise the brain for 30 minutes, just like Merv's other creations Jeopardy & Wheel. And for a neophyte, Ty Treadway is doing a great job as host. No he's not Barker, Cullen or Wink but he's doing a helluva job. Hopefully the show can be moved to better time slots. Maybe then this show can really take off.
