YouTube Expands Mobile Offerings, Offers on-the-Go Uploads

New Mobile Site to Feature Tens of Millions of Videos, Uploading via Cell Phone

By Alex Weprin -- Broadcasting & Cable, 1/24/2008 6:21:00 PM

Google-owned video-sharing site YouTube announced a plan to greatly enhance its mobile content offerings on 3G-enabled phones.

YouTube on mobile phone

Under the previous incarnation of YouTube’s free mobile site, only selected videos were made available, totaling in the thousands -- nowhere close to the millions of videos the site hosts. The new mobile site will feature tens of millions of videos, according to YouTube.

In what could be a sign of things to come, YouTube will allow users to upload videos directly from their cell phones to their YouTube accounts while on the go. As a result, video from an event could now be online seconds after it happens. A number of videos that spread across the traditional media during the past year -- such as a student being tasered at a speech by John Kerry and video from the Minnesota bridge collapse last year -- started out on YouTube.

In addition to the expanded library and mobile uploading, users will now be able to access features previously only available on the company’s regular site, including YouTube accounts, favorites and channels.
