Lifetime, Cross to Lobby for Breast-Cancer Bill

Women’s Cable Network, Desperate Housewives Star Head to Capitol Hill to Back Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act of 2007

By John Eggerton -- Broadcasting & Cable, 1/23/2008 9:09:00 AM

Lifetime Television and Desperate Housewives' Marcia Cross will be on Capitol Hill Wednesday to lobby for the bipartisan Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act of 2007.

Marcia Cross

Lifetime, which actively advocates for a host of women's issues, said myLifetime.com has collected a whopping 20 million signatures backing the bill, which it said would prevent so-called drive-through mastectomies, when women are forced to leave the hospital after "physically and emotionally difficult breast-cancer surgeries."

The bill would allow doctors and their patients -- rather than insurance companies -- to decide whether the patient is better off staying in the hospital for up to 48 hours after the surgery.

According to Lifetime, the bill currently has 204 co-sponsors in the House and 18 in the Senate.
