Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards Presented

Columbia University Hands Out Honors for Journalism Excellence

Columbia University gave out its Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards for journalism excellence Wednesday night, with two primetime newsmagazines among the winners and Belo stations raking in three awards.

CBS' 60 Minutes won for "The Mother of All Heists," while NBC's Dateline won for "The Education of Ms. Groves." Station winners were Belo’s KHOU-TV Houston, KMOV-TV St. Louis and WFAA-TV Dallas; KNOE-TV Monroe, La.; and WBBM-TV Chicago.

MSNBC also picked up an award for War Zone Diary.

The winners, picked from 510 entries, are listed below:

• CBS News for 60 Minutes: The Mother of All Heists;

• Chicago Public Radio, Alix Spiegel and PRI for This American Life: Which One of These Is Not Like the Others?;

• Florentine Films/Hott Productions and WETA-TV, Washington, D.C., for Through Deaf Eyes on PBS;

HBO, Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg for The Trials of Darryl Hunt;

• KHOU-TV Houston for Rules of the Game;

• KMOV-TV St. Louis for Left Behind: The Failure of East St. Louis Schools;

• KNOE-TV Monroe, La., for Names, Ranks and Serial Plunder: The National Guard and Katrina;

• MSNBC and Richard Engel for War Zone Diary;

• NBC News for Dateline: The Education of Ms. Groves;

• NPR and Daniel Zwerdling for Mental Anguish and the Military;

• Paladin Invision, London and WETA Washington, D.C., for Jihad: The Men and Ideas Behind Al Qaeda on PBS;

• WBBM-TV Chicago for Fly at Your Own Risk; and

• WFAA-TV Dallas for Television Justice.
