Obituary: ABC Sports' Chris Schenkel

Longtime ABC Sports play-by-play commentator Chris Schenkel, died Sept. 11 at the age of 82.

The four-time Sportscaster of the Year began his broadcasting career while a student at Purdue University. He reported Harvard football games in 1947 and, after serving in World War II, began working with CBS in 1952. He joined ABC Sports in 1965, covering basketball, bowling, football, golf and the Olympics.

Schenkel went on to become the voice of the New York Football Giants, ABC's NCAA College Football, NBA Basketball and the Monday Night Fights. He covered nine Summer and Winter Olympic Games and hundreds of thoroughbred-horseracing events, including all the Triple Crown events, as well as major golf and tennis championships and ABC's Pro Bowlers Tour.
