Comcast Taps Werner as Technology Head

As it seeks to maintain market share against its satellite and telco competitors, Comcast will have a new leader overseeing its technology efforts.

Tony Werner, former Chief Technology Officer of AT&T Broadband and the current SVP and CTO of Liberty Global, is heading to Comcast, where he will serve as CTO of the country's largest cable operator. The well-respected Werner, 50, succeeds David Fellows, who announced in June that he would be transitioning to a part-time consulting role beginning this January after a five-year stint overseeing Comcast's digital cable and voice-over-IP rollouts."Tony's wealth of engineering and technology experience will be crucial as we leverage our fiber network and IP technology to deploy advanced, integrated services," said Steve Burke, President of Comcast Cable, in a statement. "He has unparalleled expertise and insights into the cable industry's future network needs, and I'm delighted that he is joining our leadership team."Mr. Werner, who is currently based in Englewood, Colorado, but will be relocating to the Philadelphia area as part of his new gig. He currently oversees Liberty Global's strategy for video, voice and data services. He has over 25 years of engineering and technical management experience and has worked at Qwest Communications, Aurora Networks, Rogers Communications, Inc., and RCA Cablevision Systems in addition to working for John Malone at TeleCommunications, Inc. (TCI)/AT&T Broadband and Liberty Global.He is a graduate of Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount, MN, with a degree in Telecommunications.
