Fox Plans New Cable Net

New York—News Corp. Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch says Fox will launch a cable channel as early as year-end and other channels will follow. The word came as News Corp. released its third-quarter results. The company reported profits of $465 million, compared with $275 million in the same period last year. Revenue jumped 19% to $5.2 billion. Fox Entertainment Group's profits were $299 million, compared with $276 million last year, and revenue was up 5% to $2.84 billion.

'Indecency' Protest to FCC

Washington—CBS and NBC affiliate groups, joined by some noncommercial stations and the industry-funded Media Institute, warned the FCC that, because of vague indecency rules, stations might no longer be able to do live local news. "Some guy streaks behind one of our reporters holding a sign with profanities, and that's already two strikes against us," said one CBS affiliate exec. Noncommercial stations wondered about showing a nude etching on Antiques Roadshow.

Comcast Preps Ax at TechTV

Los Angeles—With Comcast's acquisition of TechTV expected to close this week, 205 TechTV staffers are being laid off. Comcast plans to merge the San Francisco-based channel with its videogame/lifestyle network G4, headquartered in L.A. The combined network will create 80 new L.A.-based jobs, some of which may go to TechTV survivors.

Sie Retiring at Starz

Englewood, Colo.—Starz Encore Chairman and CEO John J. Sie,68, will retire as CEO at the end of June. He will be replaced by Mark Bauman, who will serve on an interim basis before retiring himself. Starz, with 23 million subscribers, has declining renewal revenues and is rumored to be up for sale. Sie will remain chairman.
