Cleveland Cavaliers Hosting 3D HD Viewing Party

By Ben Grossman -- Broadcasting & Cable, 6/8/2007 6:16:00 AM

The NBA playoffs haven’t captivated the nation according to this year’s ratings on ABC, TNT and ESPN, but that’s not the case in Cleveland, where the Cavaliers are hosting a 3D HD viewing party as the team battles San Antonio in the Finals.

The Cavs and the NBA have teamed up with digital 3D outfit PACE to host the event, sponsored by FSN Ohio, for Game Two Sunday at 9 p.m. ET at Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena.

Free to the public, fans will get special 3D HD viewing glasses at the door, to watch the game taking place in San Antonio that night. Fans will watch on four special 3D HD screens, each 40 feet by 23 feet. The projectors will use DLP technology from Texas Instruments.

Fans will watch a broadcast with FSN commentators, as opposed to the national television feed.

The San Antonio Spurs lead the best-of-seven game series 1-0, after winning the first game Thursday night in San Antonio.

According to calculation from sports trade publication The Sports Business Daily, going into the NBA Finals ABC’s playoff ratings were off 23.7% from last year, while TNT and ESPN were down 11.7% and 27.3%, respectively.
