The community rights of way should be at the center of this debate, not whether the phone company is at a disadvatage in its efforts to compete with cable companies to provide access to television and broadband internet services. The public owns the rights of way and should continue to be able to negotiate for a reasonable portion of the space to build community radio, television, and internet resources for the benefit of our society as a whole, not for the battles over profit and control the phone and cable companies want. In the earliest days of media regulation a substantial percentage of the bandwidth for radio broadcasting was reserved for the public interest, which private media conglomerates have been whittling away at throughout the past 70 years or so, and they continue, despite the fact that they now use almaost all of the available space out there, while public access cable stations and community radio stations have bare bones budgets and an ongoing assault against their very existence being waged by these enormous media corporations who won't stop short of anything less than total control of all the information we have access to, what is valuable and what is not. Just say no! Community media is the only media that can address the issues and problems we face as a society, because it is the only media that is not bought and paid for by advertizers with an agenda to make us all feel we need their products to be fulfilled human beings. So, live the lie and hide your head in the sand, or stand up by the millions and demand your share of what is yours. Open and locally negotiable access to radio and television production via community access stations and open access to the internet, not another set of toll boothes that will bury the voices of artists, activists, and regular people using the internet to educate and heal. Fight the good fight! Now or it will be too late!
