Verizon has enlarged its FiOS fiber optic broadband/video footprint in Virginia.
The company said Monday it has added 22,000 customers in parts of Chesterfield County outside Richmond, and another 4,100 households households in the Newport News area.
Verizon began building its fiber-to-the-home network in Virginia in 2004.
The company, which is looking to compete with cable in the bundled-services business of phone, Internet and voice, has franchises in parts of California, Delaware, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas. In several cases, the franchises exist thanks to statewide video franchise reform bills. The company is also planning service in Indiana and Rhode Island.
