Amazon.com is getting into the original programming business, as it will launch Amazon Fishbowl With Bill Maher, a weekly series that will stream live for 12 Thursdays on the Web site beginning June 1.
Sponsored by UPS, the half-hour show will be hosted by Maher and feature interviews and musical acts.
The show marks Amazon’s newest strategy to push the books, DVDs, music and other products it sells online.
"Amazon Fishbowl With Bill Maher has a simple, yet powerful mission -- to help our customers discover new books, films and music, and to help the creators of these works find new audiences," says Kathy Savitt, Amazon.com VP for strategic communications, content and initiatives.
Amazon.com will preview the show at the Sundance Film Festival this weekend, and then stream highlights beginning Jan. 24. The preview show will feature author Stephen King, who has a new novel out that same day.
Each show will be available on-demand after its original airing.
