The Media Institute is encouraging local media outlets to participate in National Freedom of Speech Week (Oct. 15-21).
The Institute, a Washington-based First Amendment think tank backed by major media companies, is looking to both celebrate freedom and raise public awareness of those rights.
Among the companies partnering in the effort are Google, the American Society of Newspaper Editors, the Society of Professional Journalists and the Recording Industry Association. Last year, for example, Google and AOL donated ad space on their search pages.
The centerpiece of the week is a black-tie dinner in Washington, D.C., where two free speakers will be honored, Kenneth Lowe, president of E.W. Scripps, and former White House press secretary Tony Snow.
Institute backers include NBC Universal, Viacom, Time Warner, News Corp., Gannett, and Tribune.
