Leaders of two recipients of the Walter Kaitz Foundation Diversity Champion awards, Scripps Networks and Bright House Networks, stressed the practical reasons for hiring a multicultural work force because it reflects the communities they serve.

At the annual Walter Kaitz Foundation Fund-Raising Dinner Wednesday night in New York, Scripps chairman and CEO Ken Lowe said his company placed multiculturalism near the top of its list. The company endeavors to make sure its programming reflects the diversity of its core audience and now actively seeks out new minority vendors.
Bob Miron, chairman and CEO of Bright House, told the crowd, "Our hiring is organic to who we are and what we believe."
Getting the Kaitz Diversity Advocate award was Rep. Joe Baca (D-Calif.), a longtime leader on minority issues and leader of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
He recalled that once at a White House meeting of Hispanic politicians and President Bush, the president picked the first person to speak, but Baca stopped him. Bush laughed, saying, "I'm only the president of the United States, but you're the chairman of the caucus." With that, Baca took over the meeting and, he added, the president "high-fived" him.
This was likely the last Kaitz Dinner in New York. Next year, along with other cable-industry events, it will move to an October date, in Denver.
