The finale was also down 27% from the season two premiere on Jan. 14. Over three plays -- at 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. -- the season finale drew 1.1 million viewers (down 45%). The replays at 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. garnered 311,000 and 187,000 viewers, respectively.
Girls had a gross audience (linear plays, HBO On Demand/HBO Go and DVR) of 4.6 million viewers, which was in line with its first season. The network stated that 27% of Girls' gross audience comes via On Demand and HBO Go, the highest proportion of any HBO series.
The Neilsen ratings have never been a worthy measurement tool.
I worked for A C Neilsen and knew many of the folks responsible for placing the families on the system for measurement. These are men and women who have to drive over large territories and then sign ther home that is the "BASIC", if they do not sign that home then the random survey becomes less valid. Trust me when that "Basic" is not home these reps do not wait around. They get the demo info from a neighbor and move down the street until they find a nice easy home to meter. It has been that was since they were using string and pullies on the dial to line up their contacts. Today everything is much easier to install but the reps are paid so little they have to fudge their expense reports to pay the bills
