Exclusive: WWJ Detroit Scrapping Morning News
Not enough viewers to support weather-centric newscast

CBS-owned WWJ Detroit is scrapping its First Forecast Mornings newscast, a two-hour show that debuted in May 2009. The program, which initially featured headlines from the Detroit Free Press, billed itself as "an ongoing report of current and forecasted weather as well as the most current conditions on area roads."The last day of the program is Dec. 28. A CBS spokesperson said a small number of layoffs would result.
WWJ, which dropped traditional newscasts at the end of 2002, will continue to feature weather updates at 5 and 11 p.m., and a public affairs show on weekends. Said CBS in a statement:
"WWJ remains committed to local programming where it makes sense."
WWJ will fill the slot with CBS network news 5-6 a.m. and Dr. Phil 6-7a.m.
CBS also owns CW-aligned WKBD in DMA No. 11. Tom Canedo came on board as GM in October.
WWJ took over the CBS affiliation in 1994 after WJBK went with Fox.

So sad to know that I just saw the last broadcast of what I think was Detroit's BEST morning show. I thought Jill, Randy, and Syma did a superb job!

Another thing... KMAX Sacramento has managed to hold on to its morning news show since the mid '90s... and CBS acquired KOVR from Sinclair in 2005.
It seems that Detroit TV market has become a shell of its former self. Other than WJBK losing its long-time CBS affiliation in 1994... long-time WXYZ news anchor Bill Bonds a few years ago, and Diana Lewis retiring back in October.

I'm guessing that the Detroit CBS O&O has had little no luck with local news programming. WWJ morning show First Forecast Mornings had such great potential.
I'm aware of WTOG Tampa Bay, KSTW Seattle, and WKBD Detroit once having full-time functioning news departments that were shuttered during the Viacom era... and those stations still owned and operated by CBS to this day.
WJBK used to be good when it was a CBS station. I'm sure some would like to see CBS back on WJBK... either WKBD or WWJ getting FOX affiliation... and chances of that occuring are very, very slim.
