Longtime anchor's contract expires in June

Longtime WNBC New York anchor Sue Simmons is ending her 32-year career at the station.Following earlier reports, WNBC opted not to renew her contract, which expires in June. Chuck Scarborough, the other half of the well-known anchor team, will stay on for at least another three years.
NBC spokeswoman Dawn Rowan issued this statement: "We have tremendous respect and admiration for Sue Simmons. For decades, Sue has been a critical part of New York's longest tenured anchor team in the city and has more than earned her iconic status. We have been engaged in ongoing conversations with Sue about her transition from WNBC and will continue to work with her on plans to celebrate her many contributions to WNBC and the New York market."
Simmons has been with WNBC since 1980. She co-anchored both the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts, but in January was moved to co-anchor only the 11 p.m.

NBC is making a terrible mistake. Twitter hashtag and Facebook petitions were started recently in hopes of NBC reversing its decision. Long-time WNBC anchor being allowed to stay, and be allowed to retire on her own... instead of her being canned.
Twitter hashtag: #SaveSueSimmons
Facebook petition: Save Sue Simmons

For many, Sue is WNBC. Expect a lot of viewers to transition away from WNBC after she's gone.

What a BUMMER! Sue was the lynchpin of the evening news (along with Chuck Scarborough). I was a viewer for almost as many decades as Sue was affiliated with NBC. I moved out of the tri-state area into upper New York State about 3 years ago and quite honestly, SHE is one of the things I have missed most in my new area. We have a different set of local anchors in Albany, NY.
Anyway, I frankly believe the powers that be are dropping the ball by not holding onto her as long as they possibly can. Along with dropping the ball, watch the viewship=RATINGS also drop!!! Good luck Sue in any future endeavors. You WERE and ARE excellent at what you do.

I am very sorry to hear about Sue Simmons leaving WNBC. During my years in New York, Sue Simmons was always one of my favorites. Her personality alone brightened my day. I wish her much happiness and success in whatever she does.
