CBS Evening News weekend anchor and Early Show newsreader Russ Mitchell has been named a national correspondent, CBS News announced Wednesday (Jan. 13). The appointment and expanded role begins immediately. Mitchell will continue on as the Sunday Evening News anchor as well as a correspondent for CBS News Sunday Morning, but will be leaving his role at the weekday morning program."In addition to his wealth of anchoring and reporting experience, Russ has impeccable news judgment and has been an integral member of the CBS News team throughout his 18-year career here," said CBS News and Sports President Sean McManus.
Mitchell became the anchor of the Sunday Evening News in 2006. He has been a correspondent for Sunday Morning since 2002. In his tenure at the network, he has also served as anchor of The Early Show and a contributor to Evening News from Washington D.C. and then New York. He also contributed to 48 Hours.

Mr Mitchell. Although I like the current Sunday AM show host, I particularly enjoyed your gest hosting. REALLY Hope when the current host retires, you will consider taking over. KH

Russ and Julie were the professional ones on that team; Harry and especially Maggie were way too impressed with themselves. I switched to watching the ABC morning show long ago; they are real and down to earth. Very professional.

I did not know what Russ Mitchell's new role was at CBS. I hope he was in agreement with this decision.

Have always respected the consistent intellect and humility displayed by Russ Mitchell. I have admired him since he hosted the Saturday Early Show. We are not fooled by the his "new" title. He continues with the same delegated weekend roles. CBS producers have become blatant in their omission of blacks from staff programming----on screen, off-screen, and even guest performers(especially the Saturday show). At least Hispanics are visible. This retired professional will tune in to ABC mornings and Russ on Sundays!!

I will truly miss Russ Mitchell. I have always felt that CBS never did make use of his experience and professionalism. The CBS morning show is so dry especially without a "little" color. Please tell me what does CBS have against adding just a "little" color to its network including the news shows. I really feel Russ should be taking Harry's place, because he is soo boring in the morning. Thank goodness for GMA!!! Its plain to see that ABC is "Not" afraid of color in the morning.
