Viacom filed a prospectus last week with the SEC to sell up to $5 billion worth of securities. Known as a shelf registration, the company said the securities, a variety of stocks and bonds, would be used to pay down previous financing, as well as for general corporate purposes and capital expenditures. Wall Street sources said the filing was routine but that it could signal the company's interest in future acquisitions.
