Comcast Lays Off Up To 300 People
Layoffs come as Comcast restructures eastern division from six regions to four.

Comcast Cable is laying off or moving up to 300 people in a restructuring of the Eastern division from six regions to four.
According to Beth Bacha, VP, communications, for the Eastern Division, its Philadelphia metro and New Jersey regions are being combined into the new "freedom" region, and the Potomac and Marlyand-Delaware-Richmond regions will become one "Beltway" region. That to 300 positions either "changing or going away," she said, which is about 1.5% of the 20,000 employees in the division.
Bacha said there will be no changes in terms of frontline "customer-facing" folks, with most of the cuts coming at the division and region management level. She said that the company was working hard to try to relocate as many of those folks as possible to other jobs, regions or divisions, and that the move was in the works before the current financial meltdown. "I would not say these are economic moves but how to restructure to get closer to the customer in an increasingly competitive business environment."
Bacha said the move is an extension of the move back in July to reduce the number of divisions companywide from five to four, with the Midwest division going away.
Comcast's ad sales arm, Comcast Spotlight, announced a couple months ago that it would consolidate its DC and Baltimore sales folks in Philadelphia, but it is not clear how many jobs that move has or will eliminate.

I'm really afraid to make this post in fear of my losing my job. Yes, Comcast should be ashamed of themselves. Not only are they cutting High Paying jobs, they have the nerve to say that the employees on the front line aren't being affected. What a LOAD OF CRAP! They actually started with the front line. They have raising our sales goals every quarter (Yes, Quarter, NOT Year). You would think that if we produce more, they would pay us more. In contrast, most people in the sales department have actually taken a LITERAL 50 percent Pay CUT! I personally went from making about $80k to barely squeaking out $40k. That's not just me. That's the Vast Majority of the sales team. All of this while actually raising customers rates (and even the Triple Play PROMOTIONAL RATES).

All I have to say is Comcast ruined everything that Patriot Media worked so hard fixing in the Somerset and Hunterdon NJ region maybe they need to look at how the company was run as Patriot Meida, when the customer mattered. It is sad to see.....

Severance runs out....and trying to find a job at the same, or close to, same pay will be nearly impossible. All of these companies doing this - Pepsi, Yahoo, Merck, etc. - should be ashamed of themselves. They are still making plenty of money, check out their income statments on Yahoo Finace. These numbers are in the Billions!
And the government can't figure out why people aren't putting money back into the economy - we are TERRIFIED to spend any money for fear of losing jobs!

Comcast is atleast offering severance and a two month notice to those being let go- not to mention that the employees being let go or reassigned should be in positions that allow for them to be able to obtain a position in any business. In any corporation, the employee is a number when it comes to the bottom line. Timing, whether it is Christmas or Arbor Day does not matter. It is sad- but true. It happened to me in another huge company- I was absolutely devastated, but I survived and will never sell my soul to a company again.

I have heard that CN8, Detroit's Comcast Local and Chicago's Comcast Network might also take big hits.
Rumor is that "Your Morning" on CN8 will vanish by year's end, and that many of the people at both CL Detroit and CN Chicago will be let go, as those networks will reportdely be replaced in December with variants of CN8, with only a few reguional opt-outs for those regions, much like what now exists with CN8 between mid-Atlantic and New England.
