Comedy Central is giving British comedian Russell Brand, fresh off a successful stint hosting the MTV Video Music Awards, a one hour standup special.

The special -- which will feature Brand, along with a number of special guests -- will tape in November in New York for airing on the network in early 2009.
Brand, who is extremely popular in the United Kingdom, was a relative unknown to U.S. audiences when he was tapped to host the 2008 VMAs. His success on Comedy sister network MTV, as well as in movies such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall, is helping to raise his stateside profile.
"Russell Brand's comedy is a perfect match for our audience. He's a fresh new face with a rock-star aura and a unique and unpredictable act that pushes the envelope of comedy," Comedy Central senior vice president of specials and talent Elizabeth Porter said in announcing the special. "American audiences who have been exposed to Russell through Forgetting Sarah Marshall and the VMAs have seen just the tip of the iceberg."
