Fox won the primetime-ratings race Tuesday night in the 18-49 demo Tuesday thanks to the debut of new J.J. Abrams series Fringe. But the hotly hyped show from the Lost co-creator did not blow away the competition.

According to Nielsen Media Research overnight numbers, Fringe averaged a 3.2 rating/9 share in the demo from 8 p.m.-9:35 p.m., which Fox pointed out means that the numbers for the show will be approximate given the irregular running time.
Fringe did build over its 90-plus minutes, averaging a 3.1 rating in its first half-hour and a 3.3 in its last half-hour or so.
But ABC's summer reality series, Wipeout, was not far behind at a 2.9/8 for its two hours’ worth of wipeouts up against Fringe.
For the night, Fox averaged a 2.9/.8 for first to ABC's 2.7/7 for second place.
NBC was third with a 2.4/6, topped by two hours’ worth of America's Got Talent (2.6/7). CBS was fourth. Its best performer was Big Brother with a 2.6/7 from 8 p.m.-9 p.m. opposite Fringe, while The CW rounded out the list with a 1.5/4.
In its second outing, 90210 mustered a 1.7/5, while the debut of Privileged drew a 1.3/3. 90210 was down significantly from the 2.6/7 it earned for its two-hour premiere the week before, which set a record for a CW premiere.
