The Republican news cycle began in earnest Friday with the surprise announcement of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as Sen. John McCain's (Ariz.) vice presidential pick. And Fox News Channel saw its numbers spike.

The network more than doubled the primetime (8 p.m.-11 p.m.) total-viewer take of rival CNN with more than 3.5 million viewers (941,000 of them in news' target demo of 25- to 54-year-olds) to CNN's 1.7 million (657,000 in the demo). MSNBC averaged 1.06 million (340,000 in the demo).
Fox News was also the leader during the noon hour, when its Carl Cameron was first -- by less than one minute -- with the Palin news, averaging 3.85 million viewers (1.76 million in the demo) to CNN's 1.89 million (679,000) and MSNBC's 927,000 (349,000).
