MTV and video-game developer Harmonix are developing a sequel to one of 2007’s most popular games, “Rock Band.”

Rock Band

“Rock Band 2” will be available exclusively on the Xbox 360 beginning in September, with additional console support coming later this year.

The entire downloadable-content music catalog will be backwards-compatible with the new version of the game, which will also feature new guitar and drum peripherals and a wider variety of instruments. Instrument peripherals from the first game will also be backwards-compatible.

The companies will formally unveil the game at the E3 Media & Business Summit in July.

Rock Band is like a pumped-up version of karaoke, with gamers each taking control of various instruments, including drums and guitar, and another person taking the role as lead singer. Since its launch in November 2007, it has gained a cult following as a party game, while also seeing mainstream success, becoming one of the year’s best-selling titles.
