Whether or not ESPN ends up showing National Hockey League games once again, it will need a new main hockey analyst after Barry Melrose reportedly agreed to become head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning, according to a report on ESPN.com.

Melrose has been with the network in a full-time capacity since 1996, remaining so even after ESPN gave up the rights to show NHL games in 2005, when Comcast’s Versus took over as the league’s cable home. He joined ESPN after serving as coach of the Los Angeles Kings.
While Versus and NBC currently carry the NHL nationally, there have been discussions about the league returning to ESPN in some capacity.
