NBC Sports Teams Up with MTVN on AST

Action Sports Tour Gets Backing of MTV Networks, NBC Sports

By B&C Staff -- Broadcasting & Cable, 5/28/2008 12:10:00 PM

MTV Networks is teaming up with NBC Sports to beef up the Action Sports Tour -- which includes gen-Y sports such as skateboarding, BMX, snowboarding and free-style skiing.

Action Sports Tour

AST was created in 2005 at NBC Sports. During a conference call with reporters Wednesday, MTVN Music and Logo Group president Van Toffler pointed out that the network long ago married music with alternative sports -- with Dan Cortese, who went on to an acting career of sorts, as the network's pioneer sportscaster.

NBC will continue to cover the AST. Under the partnership, the tours' programming hours will more than double to 70 per year.

“MTV pioneered the marriage of music, sports and lifestyle back in the early 1990s,” Toffler said. “Today, by joining forces with NBC Sports on the AST, we’ll be giving our audience the chance to experience a next-generation sports tour that covers it all.”
